First Trimester

First Month

Conception is the point in which the sperm penetrates the ovum. Once the egg is fertilized we now have what is called a zygote, until it reaches the uterus 3-4 days later. At which it is then called an embryo.

Early cell division and formation of embryonic disc from which new organism begin to develop. Early formation of the three layers of cells in which everything will eventually develop from.

The ectoderm, from which sense organs and nervous system will develop. The mesoderm, from which your child will get it's circulatory, skeletal and muscular systems. And the endoderm, which is where we get our digestive systems from

The embryo may float freely in the uterus for about 48 hours before implanting. But after it implants itself into the uterine wall a special layer of cells is formed which shortly becomes the placenta.

The placenta is a series of complex connections between baby and mother which will carry all nutritional substance to the new baby. Waste products are also carried away through the placenta. It is a vital part of a good pregnancy.

A layer of cells forms the amnion or better known as a water-sac, which will surround the developing embryo except at his/her's umbilical cord.

Some of the more basic beginnings of life that occur are :

The beginnings of a circulatory system, with a heart tube beginning to force blood to circulate.

The rudiments of a nervous system.

Very early stages of development of an intestinal tract, liver, lungs and kidneys.

At the end of the month, your baby is about 1/4" long, crescent shaped, and has small nubs on each side of it's body the prequel of arms and legs.

Second Month

The embryo will be growing very fast over the next few weeks. Not only will it increase in size, but by the end of the second month it's heartbeat will be distinct.

Muscles and cartilage develop helping to round out contours of the body. This helps with face and neck development also. Which begins to give features a more human appearance.

This is one of the very important times of brain development. During this time the baby's forehead is very prominent, this reflects the significant development of brain in comparison to rest of body during this period. Limb buds elongate and develop clearly defined, but still slightly webbed fingers. It is also the time sex organs begin to develop.

Third Month

This is the beginning of the fetal period. The basic structures of all his organs are in place and beginning to function by the end of this month.

From the liver beginning to produce bile, vocal cords, an active digestive system, kindey functions to the beginnings of their first set of teeth. This month is critical in the baby's development. With the basics in place, from this point forward much of the future progress will simply be based on this months results.

It is also a month in which the differences between male and female embryo become more apparent. Male sexual organs showing more rapid development in this time, but female's development remains neutral.

Bones and muscles continue development, and by end of third month the spontaneous movements of arms, legs and fingers allow you to feel the baby kicking. His fingers and toes are also no longer webbed.

At three months of pregnancy, your baby is about 2 inches long.

Second Trimester

Fourth Month

At four months pregnant your baby is more than 4 inches long and covered with a layer of fine, downy hair called lanugo.

At this point, your baby's body will begin a strong growth spurt. This will allow the head size to decrease from 1/2 to 1/4th of the body size.

The baby at this point begins to stir more and their movements will be readily perceived by you. As its ability to move becomes more obvious, it's reflexes become more active as muscular maturation continue.

The back straightens, it's hands and feet are well-formed and almost fully developed.

If you have an ultrasound this month, this is the point your very likely to be able to find out whether you're having a boy or a girl.

Fifth Month

A creamy, white substance called vernix caseosa protects your baby from his long immersion in amniotic fluid. He's swallowing more and giving his digestive system a workout. If you have an ultrasound, you might see him sucking his thumb.

Your baby's skin structures begin to a final form. Hair and nails on fingers and toes appear this month. Sweat and sebaceous glands are formed and fully functional function.

Fetus is usually about one foot long and weighs about one pound at this point.

Sixth Month

Once again, another massive series of growth. Some notable events are that the eyelids which have been shut since third month, reopen and their eyes are completely formed.

Another of the finer touches such as taste buds appear on tongue and in their mouth.

Third Trimester

Seventh Month

At seven months of pregnancy, your baby weighs more than 2 pounds and looks almost like a newborn. With fingernails to cover his fingertips and contiued facial definition it is beginning to take hold of some of it's core features.

With the ability to open and close their eyes they may now turn toward a source of bright light.

In most cases a fetus is now capable of independent life from this time on. The brain is almost fully developed with Cerebral hemispheres covering almost the entire brain.

A seven month fetus is generally is about 15 inches long and weighs about three pounds.

Eighth Month

This month is even more basic than the seventh. With a weight of nearly 4 pounds and gaining about half a pound per week this is a period of final preparation.

Significant storage of fat layers begins, and often the baby is turned head downward in preparation for birth.

Ninth Month

Here in the closing month, almost everything that happens are just finishing touches. By this time most of your baby's bones have hardened, although the skull is still pliable and care should be taken in the time following birth.

During this time, the final touches are being put on the various organs and functional capacities. Fat continues to form rapidly over the entire body which smooths out the wrinkled skin and rounding out body contours.

Usually the baby is very activity often changing positions within the cramped uterus. Periods of activity will alternate with periods of rest.

Fetal heart rate becomes rapid. Digestive organs continue to expel more waste products, leading to the formation of a fetal stool, called the meconium, which is expelled shortly after birth.

The Rest

I doubt anyone will be reading this page for an inspirational guide during pregnancy, and with the result being so drastically different from person to person, I can only say, Good Luck, and don't forget to check out the newborn section.
